Numerous procedures and various natural and synthetic materials have been used to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament-deficient knee. Although the patellar tendon autograft seems to be the most commonly used substitute, techniques incorporating the pes tendons, iliotibial band, and meniscus have been described. Allografts and prosthetic ligaments are still being investigated, and, at the present time, the indications for their use may be limited. © 1992 W.B. Saunders Company.
