Imports of technology, enterprise size and R&D-based production in a newly industrializing country: The evidence from Indian enterprises

Abstract

This paper examines how Indian enterprises' output of research and development (R&D) based products is affected by their imports of technology and their size. Multiple regressions showed that larger enterprises had a higher output of R&D-based products, but increased size has a less than proportionate effect. The results for the imports were rather mixed. In the multiple regressions the imports had no significant effect. Partial correlation tests, however, which controlled for size, found that the association between enterprises' R&D intensity and their R&D products' share was significant among the technology importers, but not among the nonimporters. © 1994.
