Abstract

We report the observation of a (1×2) reconstruction of Cu(110), induced by adsorption of submonolayer amounts of lithium. We have investigated this reconstruction using channeling and blocking of 110 keV protons. The altered substrate geometry causes a decrease in the ion scattering yield. These data are only compatible with models for the reconstruction that involve small movements of the surface atoms away from their bulklike positions. © 1985.
