Abstract

An expression for oblique whistler-mode increment of instability or decrement of damping γ in a hot anisotropic plasma is derived in a form convenient for practical applications, e.g. in magnetospheric conditions. It is pointed out that small thermal corrections to the value of quasilongitudinal whistler-mode refractive index result in considerable (up to several orders of magnitude) changes of the value of γ and can even change the sign of γ. © 1988.
