Polycondensation of terephthaldehyde and 2,5-diamino-3,4-dicyanothiophene is carried out to synthesize a thienylene-phenylene polyazomethine. A study of the polyazomethine and its Cu complex is performed. This includes elemental analyses, FTIR and UV-VIS spectra, solubility, inherent viscosity, X-ray diffraction analysis and 1H NMR. Thermal analyses (TGA and DSC) are also performed. The bulk DC electrical conductivity behavior of the pristine and Cu-complex polyazomethine is measured as a function of temperature in the range 300-500 K. The polyazomethine is subjected to semi-empirical calculations for the two (anti/gauche) conformers. A model is proposed based on the band theory to explain the bulk DC electrical conductivity behavior. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
