Abstract

The problem of shock wave propagation within the framework of a linear director theory of elastic rods is examined for the case of uniform and non-uniform rods. For uniform rods the general result that all waves propagate with constant speed, without growth or decay, is obtained. Particular attention is paid in this study to the effect of rod curvature and twist on the wave speeds, wave modes and induced waves. © 1977 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
