Abstract

The current chapter provides readers with an overview of adolescent health, public health responses and sex education within Japan. Sexuality is explored within the contexts of Japan's historical views of the dominance of men over women, religious influences, social views, and traditional customs. The incidence of adolescent pregnancy is discussed as it relates to the teenage abortion rate, birthrate, and common medical issues in this population. Risk factors for teenage mothers--such as poverty, family supports and family structures--are also touched upon as are issues relating to laws and public policy. In Japan, pregnancy and birth are not covered by the national health insurance scheme because pregnancy is not regarded as a disease. This would mean that most pregnant teenagers, who are not financially independent, need to have such expenses paid by their parents or partner. Various public awareness initiatives, programming efforts, and child welfare provisions are detailed. The chapter ends in drawing the readers attention to research efforts considering the rate of adolescents with sexual experience, factors influencing sexual behavior and sexual attitudes among adolescents, and school based intervention.
