Abstract

Flange effect of special shaped columns has not been well considered on the shear bearing capacity research at present, and this effect is seldom included in formulae that had been used. Through computing analysis, the shearing stress distribution of T-shaped, L-shaped and cross-shaped columns are obtained, which is used for the study of the position of maximum shearing stress, and the analyzing of shear bearing capacity of special shaped columns under different directions. According to the results, shear bearing capacity of special shaped columns can be improved for all shapes of flange, especially for cross-shaped columns. Loading directions need to be considered for T-shaped columns. The results provide a suggestion on the consideration of flange effect for the further research.
