Angry thoughts and aggressive behavior among Malaysian driver: A preliminary study to test model of accident involvement

Abstract

In recent years road rage phenomenon has become one of the most prominent and common problems experienced by motorists especially for those who live in big cities. Many of us may experience anger while driving and others may disturb by the act of aggressive drivers. Aggressive driving is also identified as one of the human factors that lead to road crash. The aim of this paper is to build several predictive models for first time accident involvement and penalized traffic offence via logistic regression. The models used several demographic factors, the Malaysian Drivers Behavior Questionnaire (MDBQ) and Driving Anger Scale(DAS) as predictors. The results showed that being male, the increase of the length of driving experience, DBQ lapse score and DBQ violation score will significantly increase the risk of first time accident involvement as well as first time penalized traffic offence. The results have implications for driving behavior modifications interventions such as how to manage anger and aggressive.
