Abstract

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder diagnosis that is seen in the adolescent population. There is variable presentation of the severity of this illness. This chapter outlines diagnostic criteria and reviews some of the factors that can contribute to the development of an eating disorder. Detailed information is provided on how to assess for the presence of anorexia nervosa by both medical providers and dietitians. Treatment options are also outlined, including levels of care. Anorexia nervosa is best treated with an interdisciplinary team, therefore the specific roles of team members and suggested interventions are included. Nutrition is considered a key intervention due to the impact that inadequate intake can have on our organ and body systems. Malnutrition can significantly impact adolescents due to the dynamic changes that are occurring for brain and physical development during this period.
