Abstract

This study evaluated the quality of life and psychological well-being of cancer patients diagnosed with the advanced stages of the disease and who, at the time of evaluation, were in palliative care in Bogotá. The sample consisted of 83 older adults of both sexes, with different types of advanced cancer. After the informed consent was signed, the instruments applied were a Register of Socio-Demographic data, Psychological Welfare Index (Dupuy, 1984) SF36 (Medical Outcomes Trust, 1992) and the McMaster Quality of Life Scale (Sterkenburg, Woodward and King 1996), designed to measure quality of life in cancer patients. Data were analyzed according to socio-demographic variables, the type of treatment received and type of advanced disease. The discussion will take place in the light of research reports mentioned in the literature review and the definition of quality of life made by the World Health Organization.
