Abstract

Aim: To find out comparation of cold pressor test (CPT) between students with hypertensive parents (HP (+)) and without hypertensive parents (HP (-)). Background: Hypertension has been reported to be generally associated with sympathetic over activity. Sympathetic activity can be tested by the CPT. Methods: For the CPT, hand immersion up to the wrist in a mixture of ice and water (4-5degreeC) for 1 minute. Forty two male students (18-21 year old) were divided in two groups, those with and without hypertensive parents. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were measured initially, subsequent 0 second, and five minutes after CPT. Data was analyzed by t-independent test and t-paired test. Results: In the first five minute, prior to cold immersion, there was no signifi- cantly difference in resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between the groups. SBP before CPT, HP (+) 114.42, HP (-) 115,22 (p = 0.732), DBP before CPT HP (+) 77.68, HP (-) 76.70 (p = 0,628). Meanwhile, after five minutes CPT, there was no significant difference in SBP, HP (+) 117.26 (p = 0.99), HP (-) 113.13 (p = 0.112), but significantly different DBP HP (+) 80.42 (p = 0.120), HP (-) 73.08 (p = 0.016). Afterwards, there was no difference in HR after 0 second and five minutes after CPT HP (+) 78.89, HP (-) 78.82 (p = 0.981), and HP (+) 81.21, HP (-) 77.74, (p = 0.240). Conclusions: CPT may be useful as a predictor of future development of hypertension however, follow-up studies will be required to verify this.
