A limited review of the promise, problems and progress in computational aeroacoustics is undertaken. Special features of aeroacoustic problems which distinguish them from other applications in computational fluid dynamics are highlighted. Artifacts inherent in numerical simulations are summarized and the care needed in choosing a numerical method and boundary conditions is stressed. An account of the progress made in solving non-linear problems of sound-generation is given and the issues involved in hybrid approaches for acoustic predictions are discussed.
