Abstract

The development of democratic political structures among the Cossacks of the Dnieper region and elsewhere in Ukraine in the 17th and 18th centuries attracted the attention of numerous German writers, such as Johann Christian von Engel, who wrote about the region's history and geography. The interest in Ukraine continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the Habsburg Empire, which controlled a number of regions inhabited by Ukrainians, as well as in Germany.
