Reviews John Frederick Schwaller's Origins of Church Wealth in Mexico: Ecclesiastical Revenues and Church Finances, 1523-1600 (1985), Linda Greenow's Credit and Socioeconomic Change in Colonial Mexico: Loans and Mortgages in Guadalajara, 1720-1820 (1983), Mercedes Pizarro's translation of Barbara A. Tenebaum's book Mexico en la Epoca de los Agiotistas, 1821-1857 (1985), and Leonor Ludlow and Carlos Marichal's edition Banca y Poder en Mexico, 1800-1925 (1985). This review article discusses the research sources and methodology used by these authors to write the economic history of credit and banking in Mexico during colonialism and independence, focusing on areas, such as judicial proceedings, that need further clarification.
