Abstract

Reviews the second edition of the book "Group Process, Group Decision, Group Action," by Robert Baron and Norbert Kerr (2003). Authors have produced a book that manages to bring the American and European approaches to social psychology within touching distance, in a valuable and creditable manner. In the introductory chapter the text places social identity and self-categorisation theories, largely European perspectives, alongside social comparison and social exchange theories predominantly the work of American social psychologists. The coverage provided by each chapter is thorough and sound. Each chapter commences with short statements of key concepts followed by background commentary that sets the scene for the theoretical and research coverage. Authors give illustrations of the ways in which group process phenomena assist as a means of understanding many contemporary world problems.
