No matter what the subject matter I turn my attention to, I find that my years of studying and working with Everett Hughes have marked my approach to it; I think that most people who have known him as teacher and colleague have the same experience. In this paper, I deal with a topic—the illicit use of drugs—which Everett has never himself formally treated; yet I find that what I have to say reveals some of the important things I learned from him.
