The degradation of cellulose nitrate with light and heat, and the products of degradation, are discussed. A method for identification of cellulose nitrate is given together with the trade names of several common conservation materials which contain it. [Abstractor's note: The conclusions of the article that cellulose nitrate cannot be regarded as a stable compound and that more research into adhesives for conservation is needed are not new.]
