Abstract

My objective in compiling this bibliography was to see to what extent the world of visual artists intersects with the world of engineers and scientists. My inquiry was two-fold: In what ways are painters and sculptors inspired by science and technology in terms of subject matter? And, how do these artists make practical use of the inventions, systems or theories that emerge from the laboratories of scientists and engineers when creating their works of art? A by-product of the project was the retrieval of literature dealing with the analysis of creativity through scientific means. In conducting my investigation, I focused on indexes designed for scientists and engineers rather than those designed for artists or art historians. This was because I sought to isolate citations pertaining to sculptors and painters working the the realm of science and technology on a sophisticated rather than superficial level. I concluded that the dialog between some artists and scientists or engineers is extensive, for I discovered numerous citations on works of art that either have a scientific or technological theme or were created through the hypotheses, procedures, or constructions devised by engineers or scientists. The bibliography is intended for engineers, scientists, visual artists, and art historians.
