This chapter introduces the most common medical imaging modalities, including X-ray imaging, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, functional imaging, ultrasound, and photoacoustic imaging. In addition to describing the energy-tissue interactions that determine image formation, we describe computational methods to describe image quality. Finally, we discuss clinical use cases and explore how different imaging modalities contribute to patient care in both diagnosis and treatment.
