In this article it is demonstrated that reactive cobalt(I) complexes having η5-bonded cyclohexadienyl ligands are formed by the hydrocobaltation of benzene or alkylbenzenes. These are valuable transfer reagents for 14e-diphosphinemonohydridocobalt fragments ([R2P(CH2)nPR2]CoH where R = C6H11 or 1-C3H7 and n = 2 or 3) and function as intermediates in the cobalt-catalyzed hydrogenation of benzene or alyklbenzene. In addition, cobalt sandwich compounds having a zwitterionic structure are discussed. © 1990.
