Abstract

A pathologic fracture is defined as a fracture occurring in a pathologically altered bone whose normal integrity and strength have been compromised by an invasive disease or destructive process. Usually a low mechanical force, one which would have left a normal bone intact, is sufficient to fracture the bone altered by a local or systemic disease process. Pathologic fractures usually lack significant soft tissue injury unlike traumatic fractures.
