Abstract

The authors discuss the importance of studying clientelism. 1- responsible party government does not work in new democracies. 2- clientelistic practices still exist in advanced democracies. 3- clientelism hinders economic reforms due to the threat of ending the patronage links. THIS CHAPTER IS GREAT BECAUSE IT SUMMARIZES ALL LINES OF RESEARCH IN CLIENTELISM, AND THE MANY VARIABLES THAT MATTER.
