Abstract

Blood sample transport via pneumatic tube systems (PTS) reduces the turnaround time of laboratories, but it might influence analysis results. Its effect on platelet concentrates (PCs) is not known. Platelet function was investigated after single and multiple PTS transport in comparison with storage and irradiation. Optical and impedance aggregation, CD-62, and microparticles changed as a result of storage, but not due to transport. Irradiation lowered platelet function independently. Multiple transport impaired thrombin receptor-activating peptide-induced aggregation. This investigation demonstrates the feasibility of PTS transport. As platelet function depends on storage, it may be more important to transfuse fresh PCs. © 2012 International Society of Blood Transfusion.
