Mathematics in the National Curriculum Mathematics intheNationalCurriculumis organisedonthebasis of four key stages.Theprimary range covers Key Stage 1for 5 to 7 year olds (Years 1and 2) and Key Stage 2 for 7 to 11year olds (Years 3 to 6).The components of each key stage include Programmes of Study, which set out themathematics that children should be taught; AttainmentTargets (ATs), which set out the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding that children should attain; and Level Descriptions,whichdescribethetypesandrangeofperformancethatchildrenworkingataparti- cular level should be able to demonstrate within each Attainment Target. Mathematics in the National Curriculum is a minimum statutory requirement. Since its introduction in 1989 it has beensignificantlyrevisedanumberof times.TheProgrammesofStudy formathematicscurrently include: . Ma1: Using andApplyingMathematics; . Ma 2:Number andAlgebra; . Ma3: Shape, Space andMeasures; . Ma 4: HandlingData (Key Stage 2). Mathematics intheNationalCurriculumalsopresents links toother subjects, andsuggestions for the use of ICT. The Primary Framework for Literacy and Mathematics The National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) was introduced into primary schools throughout England in 1999. The NNS Framework forTeachingMathematics was intended to supplement the NC Order and offer a sort of national ‘scheme of work’ for mathematics. The Secretary of State’spublicationofExcellenceandEnjoyment ^ Astrategyforprimaryschools in2003resulted in the establishment of the Primary National Strategy. This national strategy brought the National Numeracy Strategy and the National Literacy Strategy together as the Primary Framework for literacy andmathematics. This Framework is designedto offer a flexible structure tomeet the learning needs of all children.
