Abstract

The present review summarizes recent research achievements related to the use of alternative fuel (specifically, dimethyl ether) in portable fuel cell devices. This review discusses the development of new electrocatalysts for successful dimethyl ether (DME) oxidation, the preparation and performance of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and the effects of different fuel cell operation conditions The mechanisms of processes occurring at the anode and cathode are described, as shown in the literature. Different MEA structures are suggested for the purpose of altering the catalytic activity of anode catalysts and thereby improving the power output of direct DME fuel cells. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
