Abstract

Part of a special issue on the attitudes of urban parents toward children's mathematics learning and equity issues in mathematics education. A study examined ten Latino parents' attitudes toward a mathematics pedagogy and curriculum for social justice. Results revealed several reasons why these Latino parents supported a social justice mathematics curriculum, including their desire to teach children to stand up for and defend their rights; their belief that mathematics was a central part of life; and their belief that mathematics should prepare students for life. Other results and implications of the study are discussed.
