Abstract

The organisers have done very well to include the topic "Science and Society" in the programme. Our society is nowadays very interested in how science justifies what it does. This must be so, because it is society which provides the considerable sums that are needed today to subsidise scientific research, and also because the results of scientific research have an ever increasing impact on society itself.
