Damage attributed to lightning was compared on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and 1961 respectively. The ratio of gaps to undisturbed forest was found to differ between forest types and, in the economically more valuable type, to be large enough to justify the proposal that the incidence of lightning gaps, as well as other damages, should be taken into consideration in forest inventories and management planning.
