Transportation and Land Use

Abstract

Cities are complex entities shaped by their transportation and land uses systems and mainly driven by technological, economic, and social changes. Urban land use comprises which activities are taking place where and their level of spatial accumulation, which indicates their density, intensity, and concentration. Land use and activities generate flows of passengers and freight supported by transport systems, which reflects a specialization of urban functions around residential, commercial, institutional, manufacturing, and distribution areas. There is a spatial and temporal evolution in the relationships between transportation and land use, which has been the focus of concentric, sectoral, and hybrid representations.
