Abstract

Thoughts about sustainable development have increased in the latest years, especially with regards to the environmental performance of the economic activities. Industrial companies have an urgent need to reduce the environmental impacts of their activities (such as climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution increase) and resource use. There is a need to achieve more in economic terms, with less environmental impact. Various concepts are presented to reach sustainability such as dematerialization, eco-efficiency and changes in consumers behaviours and consumption modes. Today, economic activities are characterized by the focus on more customized offers that can fit with consumers requirements. These offers present more attractive solutions in terms of quality and price through products, services or a combination of both. Authorities recommendations aim to encourage companies to provide various offers and to improve the existing production processes in order to minimise environmental impacts along the life cycle of products and processes.
