In this chapter, we discuss the basic principles in the evaluation and management of vascular trauma. We start by exploring the natural history and epidemiology of vascular injuries before discussing the primary mechanisms and pathophysiology of vascular trauma. The evaluation, diagnosis, and initial management of bleeding and resuscitation is reviewed before the basic surgical principles are discussed. The chapter concludes with a review of commonly encountered clinical scenarios that every vascular surgeon should be familiar with.
