Small business managers seem to be overlooked by behaviorial scientists in their efforts to promote new techniques for inspiring the will to work. This article details the best of two psychologically “pure” behavioral techniques and integrates them into a useable program for small business managers. Activation theory explains how and why workers respond to routine work in ways that they do. This theory provides a neuropsychological foundation for job design. Job redesign is intended to better motivate workers by allowing them to feel personally responsible for an identifiable and meaningful portion of work.
