Abstract

Studied clinical characteristics and personality traits associated with drug addiction. 26 male and female heroin or cocaine addicts (aged 18–40 yrs) from a therapeutic community in Spain were administered the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) and a modified semistructured interview (J. L. Graña, 1994) after detoxification. The results indicate a high incidence of various personality changes associated with drug abuse. Ss with pronounced drug abuse had elevated scores on the schizoid, phobic, antisocial, and passive–aggressive Basic Scales of the MCMI–II and scored higher than the other Ss on Pathologic Personality (aggressive–sadistic, self-destructive, schizotypical, and borderline). Ss who abused drugs less generally had lower scores on MCMI–II Basic Scales and on Moderate and Severe Clinical Syndromes. The importance of the findings for clinical intervention is discussed.
