Abstract

Children and young people need training to develop media competence in our society, as well as education in mass media use and consumption. These training and education programmes need to take a critical approach. In order to design and cover mass media tools in the school curriculum, we need to study first the level of media competence and this is the focus of this article. Specifically, we present here the findings of a study about media competence of Primary Year 4 children that was carried out in Andalusia. The results of an online questionnaire indicated that there were three levels in the development of media competence. Furthermore, there were significant statistics differences in different variables, like gender and age.
