Abstract

This chapter focuses on risky decision making and related behaviors among individuals experiencing state positive and negative mood, as well as those diagnosed with a mood or bipolar disorder. The current status of the literature is reviewed, with a close examination of the evidence supporting altered reward processing, state versus trait mood, and the behavioral activation system hypersensitivity hypothesis of bipolar disorder as causes of riskier decision making. Potential contributions of performance on other executive tasks and treatments are also considered.
