Abstract

This chapter examines the digital technologies for teaching and learning and argues the importance of access to the internet to equalize learning opportunities and serve democratic ideals of ACE. It begins with an overview of the current state of technology for ACE, discusses new trends in digital technologies, particularly the internet of things and AI, and then provides implications for ACE. King’s contribution provided coverage of a host of digital technologies for teaching and learning that are still relevant a decade later and identified a trend toward increased informal and self-directed learning that continues today. Digital technologies for adult learning include social media, online discussion boards, blogs, wikis, instant messaging, massive open online courses, video and screen capture, video conferencing, and topic aggregators. New digital technologies will also provide new capacities for learning at individual and collective levels as the world becomes more interconnected, global and, yet, simultaneously particular and local.
