Abstract

The dissolution of steel in HCl solution at 30 °C with and without benzotriazole (BTA) was studied. The corrosion rate and the anodic and cathodic polarization parameters were determined. BTA was found to be a very effective inhibitor of both the anodic and the cathodic polarization reactions. The experimental results indicate that the corrosion rate of steel decreases as the concentration of BTA increases. Linear relations were obtained between the logarithm of the corrosion current density and the pH and between the corrosion potential and the pH in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The corrosion reaction was found to be first order. © 1984.
