(from the chapter) The purpose of this chapter is to offer an energy model of the self in personality and to show how the self's executive functioning operates. Specifically, it is argued that this functioning depends on a limited resource that is similar to strength or energy. Following exertion, the self is depleted and therefore less able to make choices or regulate itself until this resource can be replenished. This chapter also offers theories of self-control, comments on testing theories of self-control, and offers implications for understanding human performance in industrial and organizational settings, as well as for the more basic understanding of personality.
