The medico-legal answer is clear, GPs should continue to act in the best interests of the individual patient, as described in the CMC's guidance Good Medical Practice'. 'In providing care you must... prescribe drugs or treatment, including repeat prescriptions, only where you have adequate knowledge of the patient's health and medical needs.
