The article reports on the Argo program initiated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) in 2009 to test Argo floats for getting data economically from sea areas not often visited by a research vessel. The floats were initially tested in the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea, one of the largest brackish water bodies in the world. It explains how the floats, by measuring the low-salinity profiles of the Baltic Sea, allow researchers to view seasonal changes in the water mass.
