Abstract

Simulating directional reflections and transmissions with spatial variation is essential for rendering transparent materials. To render this phenomenon in an interactive rate, multiple consecutive directional transmissions were approximated as serial filters. The method makes it possible to pre-calculate both reflected and transmitted distant lightings, and to store the results to the same set of environment maps for real time rendering. The proposed algorithm was implemented on the modern graphics hardware, generating convincing rendering results and interactive frame rates. The presented method is useful for many interactive applications such as computer game and virtual reality. ©2010 IEEE.
