Abstract

This chapter reviews and critiques both foundational and emerging models of multicultural counseling. The chapter is organized into two major parts. In Part 1 the authors review two longer-standing, more foundational models—D. W. Sue et al's multicultural counseling competency model and J. E. Helms's racial identity theory and interaction model. The second section of the chapter presents descriptive overviews and critiques of five emerging models of multicultural counseling: acculturation, locus of problem etiology, and goals of counseling model; model of worldview and change; perceptual schemata model of cultural sensitivity; integrative model of cross cultural counseling; and the common factors perspective. It is hoped that this review till stimulate additional systematic testing of the models using both positivist (theory driven) and constructivist (theory generating) paradigms.
