Abstract

By reference to research on African, and particularly East African, pastoralists, the article looks at some of the specific issues that have emerged from anthropological studies of mobile livestock herders published over the last decade. Among the topics reviewed are: a working definition of nomadic pastoralism; pure pastoralism versus multi-resource exploitation; women's role and status; ecology and social organisation, and the interactions of nomadic pastoral societies with other groups. -J.Sheail
