Abstract

This study assumes that the greater the dis- persion of income within an occupation, the greater the income risks facing anyone selecting that occupation. Drawing on the theory of risk- bearing, the author tests the hypotheses that riskier occupations must offer entrants greater expected income, and individuals with greater family wealth will choose riskier occupations. An analysis of data from the 1960 Census and the Project Talent study confirms these hy- potheses
