Abstract

This paper describes the potential of using ionizing radiation to disinfect sewage and sludge, as well as the possibilities of recycling natural resources and their by-products. Presented here is a brief review on the development of radiolytic treatment of wastewaters with electron beam accelerators or 60Co gamma sources to eliminate organic and biological contaminants from liquid and solid wastes. Suitable radiation doses are suggested for each particular case. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
