Abstract

This article explains the significance of the notions of rules and rule-following for linguistics and philosophical reflection on meaning. Brief outlines of Kripke's Wittgenstein's 'sceptical paradox' about rule-following and meaning and his attempted 'sceptical solution' to those worries are provided, together with a very brief guide to other philosophical responses to the skeptical paradox. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
