Construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), Britain's first major new railway for more than a century, is well under way. The 109km railway is being built in two sections (Figure 1): Section One from the Channel Tunnel to Fawkham junction and Section Two from Ebbsfleet to St Pancras. The new link is to bring major transport and socio-economic benefits including extra capacity, faster and more reliable commuting to and from London. Following this year's annual BGA meeting, the discussion was devoted to the geotechnical aspects of Section Two of CTRL.
