It has recently been discovered that ordered (topological) maps of observable characteristics are formed in arrays of adaptive units. These arrays receive input signals which reflect some elementary properties of the exterior environment, and produce output responses which are localized in the output plane. The topological order of output responses, after adaptation, approximates the topological order of the corresponding input events.
