Discusses the phenomenon of transference in psychosis, asserting that the concept of psychosis must be based on a psychoanalytic pattern of mental functioning. Transference is defined as an unattainable part of reality that passes from one structure to another and that has different features in different types of psychoses. The notion of a single transference pertaining to a single psychosis is held to invalidate the theories and techniques employed in the treatment of psychotic structures. It is contended that transference is present in all human relationships and that it is an essential element of a communicative style.
